How Do Philips UV Lamps Work?

UV-C radiation is germicidal, which means it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, destroying their ability to multiply.

More specifically, Philips ultraviolet lamps cause damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. When these bonds form, the organism is incapable of reproducing, in fact, when the organism does try to replicate, it dies.

Philips UV Lamps FAQs

What is a Philips UV Lamp Used for?

A UV Philips lamp is used for disinfectant purposes. It sterilises surfaces, air, objects and water, reducing the risks of bacteria growth and making them ideal for medical environments.

A Philips UVC lamp, or germicidal lamp, is also commonly used in water filtration systems, inactivating bacteria, viruses and spores that grow in these habitats. New experiments have shown that it is also successful in killing Covid-19, proving its use in hospitals, homes and office spaces.

How Long Does a Philips Ultra-Efficient LED Lamp Last?

A Philips UV lamp is known to last up to 9000 hours before they need replacing. This ranges between 6 and 12 months, depending on how often you use it and the average lifespan quoted by the manufacturer. Many UV systems are now designed with a controller, indicating when you should replace a UV lamp.

Philips is a high-quality brand that produces durable and reliable UV lamps, meaning the products they manufacture are likely to last longer. However, it’s still important to replace your Philips lamp after the recommended timeframe, as it will become less effective.

What Types of Philips Lamps are Available?

How Do You Clean a Philips UV Lamp?

Philips lamps themselves should not be cleaned, instead, you should replace them every 6 to 12 months depending on use. If your lamp is fitted with a quartz sleeve, you should try and clean these sleeves every 6 to 12 months depending on water quality in your area. You can read more about how to clean a UV quartz sleeve here.
